Wah-lah! It is completed! This reeaaalllly fun piece is at the behest of those cool dudes at Let’s Be Friends Again, Curt Franklin and Chris Haley. Apparently people like them some Devil Dinosaur? I certainly did not anticipate that in as many as 10 requests he would come up twice. Anyway! The suggestion was: “Superman and Scott Pilgrim high-fiving while they are riding/standing/surfing on the back of Devil Dinosaur who is himself surfing. Surfing next to Devil Dinosaur is “Curt” (who is wearing sunglasses) and “Chris” who is on Curt’s shoulder’s as he surfs watching Superman & Scott high-five on Devil Dinosaur’s back and thinking it is very awesome”. Aw bananas, I forgot sunglasses. Hmm….let’s not mention this again, okay?
I could not find a scanner that would copy a piece of illustration board this big, so we’ve got photos baby! I have to say, this was really fun to do. I’m real rudimentary level with my painting so using acrylic is like an advanced coloring book. I draw the lines and then I fill them in with the right tube of paint. When it comes to under the belly you get a dab of black, on top of the back you get a touch of white. See? Not fancy. I’ll work on that, but until then we’ll get pieces like this! PS Devil Dinosaur is kind of ridiculous with all of those lines. I want to throw them out and reinterpret the character but I also like the challenge of trying to figure out how to use them to work with the character. Successful? I think I can hear Jack Kirby rolling around in his grave right now.
If you haven’t stopped by LBFA (why haven’t you?!) you might not get that this is kind of their shtick. If they can grab someone and get them to draw- it’s gotta be Scott Pilgrim high fiving Superman. Devil Dinosaur is a bonus. Their pose is pretty flat, but I really wanted to draw Fleischer’s Superman. Not a very fluid character, but still one of my favorite interpretations of the hero. I really enjoy their different swim wear. For Scott I enjoy the insistence to wear wristbands swimming and for Superman? Dudes. Look at him. Old timey swim suit with bathing cap, cape, and above-the-clothes-superhero-undies? Yes please.
Here’s a close-up of Chris and Curt, totally enjoying the epicness in front of them. Oh yeah, their board is covered in kittens (and Devils is covered in flowers). Their bathing suits have little details of their alter egos: Mr. Fahrenheit Jr. and The Enthusiast. Man, this was a really enjoyable suggestion. The whole painting-a-piece-of-illustration-board took longer then the requisite week but there should be issues no longer! Summer is on the horizon and I’ll be able to draw like a maniac. No pesky things like higher education getting in my way anymore.
