This last request was some tough noogies. Zach Weiner of Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal provided a simple and epic: Detective Chimp vs. Krypto. Man, if that didn’t get me going. I love comics, and I love drawing animals, so any comic character that is an animal has a very special place in my sketching heart. Also, comic animals are usually completely ludicrous, so there’s that too.
But then there was this problem…..
Sometimes people give me awesome ideas and I need to live up to them (I’m looking at you Giant Chameleon vs. Robot Unicorn). Just any sketch will not do. So then I spend forever thinking about what I could do with the idea presented, and everything seems stupid. The biggest trouble here was that “vs” word. It implied fighting, and I had no idea how a chimp with human intelligence and a super canine would even cross paths, let alone fight. I wrestled with it for a week and a bit. And then I thought of an idea, and I happen to like it very much.
I started this….less then a week ago? I cranked out these pages and then was pretty ready to start drawing something else. For that reason there are still pencil marks on the page, sometimes there’s no background, and if you see anything else that’s wrong- that too. Don’t misinterpret, it was a wild amount of fun to do. The disclaimer is getting tossed in for when you realize that you don’t even understand what’s going on. I’m letting you know that I already figured that would happen.
There were also some good lessons learned with the inking pen. The most obvious is not to use the same pen for dialogue anymore. It was tough going when I realized that that pen was so stiff the only lettering that was coming out of it was going to be stale.
And lastly, the entire idea is a riff off of Marvel Zombies. Obviously enough the idea isn’t so high concept that you had to read it to get what’s happening. It’s just a little dash of fun added to the experience. That comic was a very fun experiment. For all of the highs and lows that it has had I will always relish the moment where Peter Parker bites into Aunt May… I love comics.
Thanks for stopping!
