There’s a risk that you run when you take on peoples’ suggestions: That you’ll have no flippin’ clue what they’re talking about. I’ve drawn things all over the map, like, Galactus commanding a Cosmic Pup or a slow loris manning an aircraft,. It’s usually pretty easy for me to grasp the ‘sense’ in these off the wall suggestions. Of course Rex the Wonder Dog would punch Hitler in the face, it would be weird if he didn’t.
But this request?

Yeah, I know, the request didn’t say anything about party-going monkeys. That was my weak attempt to make sense of what was happening in the picture. I don’t know if you guys get my situation. From start to finish a piece like this probably takes from 6hrs-8hrs. Which means that’s how long I was thinking about it, and GOING MAD not understanding it.
It’s kind of an accomplishment for Mr. Tobin. When I spend my days drawing a group of kids fighting inter-space-dimensional monsters, it’s hard to phase me. He got it in one stroke.
As addled as I’ve become by it, it’s also a welcomed challenge. Future me will hate me for claiming this, but I’d do it again in a second.
