Well, Jon, the elements are certainly gonna help on that front.
As I mentioned before, Jon is the best. I’m almost done Storm of Swords, and every chapter I get through just makes me agree with me more. It’s a pretty easy breakdown for me. First, I prefer Starks over all the other families because they were raised by the epic Eddard and they have direwolves.
Jon also racks up major points because he’s a bastard. I find the world of Westeros particularly engrossing because we’re not just hearing from liege lords. Martin gives voice to all characters, no matter their station. For my money, I’m always happy when a Jon or Tyrion chapter comes up. Along with the women, they are the most maligned characters in the book, by no other virtue than how they were born. Despite their setbacks, they carry weight because they refuse to be counted out. Tyrion because he wants to prove his necessity, and Jon because he’s got honor pouring out of his ears.
For them, Martin has to fashion more complex stories in which their only way out is by proving their worth. Doubtless, the other characters are tested, but until they die, they’ll never actually be out of the game. Tyrion or Jon could be out the second they mess up and are dismissed. I love that they’re constantly tested, and meet the occasion every time.
Since I obviously love Tyrion too, I might sketch him up, but Jon gets first go-round because he’s got Ghost.
And that direwolf is awesome.
Thanks for stopping!
