Okay, so I didn’t do as well as I’d of liked with the Atomic Robo vs. the Mac’Tards. So, I asked for another suggestion (practice makes perfect, right?). Man, I need to learn how to read.
So this was suggestion numero dos from the patient Scott Wegener of Atomic Robo: Atomic Robo versus bating up the Voltron made out of lions, with the leg of the Voltron made out of cars, boats, and spaceships.
So first I set out on this conquest to figure out how Voltron would be bated, and that’s where this comes from:
After a late night of sketching I just plopped down in front of a piece of bristol and decided to draw something light and fun. One prisma marker and a box of crayons later I had the above picture. Complete with Atomic Robo bating a Voltron out with a battery. I’m basically 100% sure that Voltron runs on batteries. I hear that most defenders of the universe do.
Later one of my friends pointed out that what the suggestion was probably meant to read was “beating” not “bating”. Whoops. So then I set phasers to sketch and drew Atomic Robo beating through Voltron.
So that’s where this came from! Man, this was such a butt to get everything in a happy perspective. I kept trying to draw Atomic Robo’s body like a person and for some reason that did not work out to well. It might have to do with his proportions are unique…as he is a robot, but my drawing hand refused to agree on this point. I’m not happy with the end result for this picture but drawing it was really educational. This is the first picture that I got to use an actual inking pen on. Never touched the stuff before. I realize now that the tip, nub, whatever the metal-pen-part-is-called, was not the best shape for the job, but I still treasure the learning experience. I know that I’m afraid of shading and going darker, and coloring in general, so I’m going to try and focus on that for future pieces.
But yeah, since Robo is a bajillion times smaller than Voltron I decided to ignore that and make them the same size. Of course that wasn’t enough as they had to have a battle royale in the middle of a metropolis. The most beautiful part is that I would not be surprised if something like this happened in the comic. And that is when you know you’re reading greatness.
You know what the saddest thing about this is? I realized as I was searching for Voltron images, days into drawing Voltrons, that Wikipedia had multiple entries under Voltron. And that is when I remembered some words I hadn’t acknowledged before in the request: “Atomic Robo versus beating up the Voltron made out of lions, with the leg of the Voltron made out of cars, boats, and spaceships“.
Whoa. Whoa. Back up- there’s more than one Voltron?
I thought I was a good little nerd. Searching for back issues of comics, reading my encyclopedias of the Marvel and DC universes, knowing obscure facts from comics decades before my birth. How is it that something like “There are multiple Voltrons” exists as a fact that I missed?
So because I did not know that there was more than one Voltron I ignored the entire second half of the request. Ha! Man, I am sabotaging myself into doing a poor job-as if I need the help!
So I sat with head in hand, hours of sketching these guys behind me, and just said screw it. I pulled out a few markers and resolved to just sketch something:
And at last, we have the actual request. Just as I’m no good with color, I am not so keen on grayscale either. Is Voltron’s forehead too big? Nope. This is the extra smart version of Voltron. Robo has one of the legs of Vehicle Voltron (that’s the bastard’s name!) in hand and is ready to smash it into Voltron’s face. Yeah!
So what have we learned through this Moby Dick length post?
1) If I think I stunk up a request I’ll come crawling back, full of remorse, pleading for a second chance.
2) That even with the impetus of a second chance there is no such thing as quality assurance on this website.
Nice Shel. I was thinking your first sketch was in response to the request, “What does Atomic Robo do on his day off?” So, it got me thinking the requests you get are way too specific. I guess that’s the point, but methinks you should be allowed more creativity.
Something like, “What would happen if Eric the Palladin (Donny Most) from Dungeons & Dragons appeared in an episode of Happy Days and punched Ralph Malph (Donny Most) in the face”
I guess that was a little specific too. Ah well.
Specifics are what I want! The more oddly specific you are the more that I feel like I’m drawing a picture for someone- and I find that highly motivating.
Wow this is a great resource.. I’m enjoying it.. good article
