Art Roll Whistling Wolf

Whistling Wolf

Kind of a 180 from Tuesday’s post. I’ve been working on more Jon sketches, but while I finish those, I thought I’d scan in another favorite wolf of mine:

It’s cool if you don’t recognize him. This happens to be my favorite digimon: Garurumon. Among my friends the show isn’t that beloved, but I was head over heels for it. I was more more of a fan of Digimon as a show then I was of Pokemon.

To 10-year-old me, Digimon was amazing because it happened in our world. All of the kids were just normal elementary schoolers that first were sucked in to a digital world rife with giant monsters, and later the monsters actually crossed over into our world. Not only that, but the monsters spoke English (or Japanese, whatever) and changed size all of the time. That was one of the things I never got over with Pokemon: I like Charmander. He’s adorable and a tough little fire spit. However, he’d grow up into Charmeleon (kinda ugly if you ask me) and then the ever badass Charizard. But you can’t coo over a Charizard. The way digimon power up, get bigger, and then shrink again was perfect for me.

I still care about what happened to all of the digi-destined, but Ash and co. lost me when Misty started carrying around Togepi. Man, that pokemon is so lame. To be fair, I will always be crazy about Pokemon, but it’s success was the level of immersion you got in the video game. You were the pokemon trainer, not Ash, and gosh dang if I don’t care a crazy (maybe unhealthy) amount for the pokemon I train.

This Garurumon….it’s not a very good sketch. I’ll probably return to him and other nerd dogs I love, and espouse more about why I think he’s a kickbutt character. (Spoiler: It’s mostly because he’s a big ass wolf).

Thanks for stopping!
